BCS Joy

Posted by momto6 on 30 November 2006

Okay, while I admit to being a sport fanatic, this is little I enjoy more than college football.  This may come from going to West Virginia University and attending games in both old and new Mountaineer Stadium.  It may come from a son who played on a high school state championship football team.  It may come from a father who has had season tickets to Syracuse Orangemen games (I know it is not p/c) since I can remember so many, many years.

This time of year, though, is frustration to me.  I listen to sports talk radio.  I read all the articles I can find online and in magazines and newspapers.  I just cannot understand the BCS.  I know I am not alone but in the scheme of the way I deal with most things in life, I am going to let it go this year.

I am going to be happy when WVU goes to the Gator Bowl.  I am going to be joyful when Ohio replays Michigan or not.

The BCS is what it is but for now, the important point is IT IS!

How much information is “too much?”

Posted by momto6 on 30 November 2006

Okay, I have a profile at an online dating site.  I have had it for over a year and find it humorous when people think that it would be weird if I had one.  I don’t advertise the fact but if someone asks me in person, I tell them.

My question du jour deals with how someone answers questions posed by someone else on said site?  I mean am I required to answer totally and completely?  Can I answer the question but withhold some information and still be truthful?

I felt guilty as I was getting to know this guy.  He asked the age of my children.  I honestly replied my oldest will graduate from college next spring and my youngest is in middle school.  That was enough information for someone who had mentioned student teaching earlier in life.  After about a day, I had to reply further.  I felt guilty.  I have six children and they are between the ages of 22 and 12.

Is that too much information?

Black Friday/Cyber Monday

Posted by momto6 on 29 November 2006

Maybe I am little late.  I realize that “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” both have gone past.  What I don’t get is why, unless you own a retail or online establishment, either is important.

Black Friday is not actually the busiest day in retail for the year.  I believe that may take place after Christmas.  It is, though, the start of the part of the retail year that brings the companies into the black.  Retail profits are not great.  To have a business be in the black takes almost 90% of the year.  I am sure you have heard the saying, ” 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people.”  Well, 90% of the profits in retail are earned in 10% of the year.

Instant Gratification

Posted by momto6 on 17 November 2006

Okay, I am finally willing to admit that this technology age has made us a society of instant gratification. I work for a company that provides web sites for a number of different reasons but mostly for political campaigns. The campaign cycle is over but really just starting for some. Also, there are states that are having run-offs so I realize sites are important to be up but there are parts of getting a web site online that are out of the control of the world. Also, there are parts of it that must be done by honest-to-God humans who do not live, eat and breathe work.

Unfortunately, in this world of see a clip of the movie you are going to tonight NOW, in this world of online dating sites with pics and such, in this world of I want it NOW, everyone thinks that everything involved with the internet is instant.

Let me clue you in … the internet is only as good as the people behind it. It is sort of like the old it wasn’t the computer that did it wrong but the wrong data was put in. Things are not instant. Even the internet relies on people. People are human. People take time to do most things.
